On this day in 1980, the band released their third single ‘News At Ten’, the follow up to the smash hit ‘Turning Japanese’. Taken from their imminent debut album ‘New Clear Days’, the track was another Vapors classic with lyrics about the mundanity of modern life and living at home with your parents. Coupled with two tracks on the b-side ‘Wasted’ & ‘Talk Talk’, it unfortunately failed to repeat the success of TJ and only reached 44 in the UK chart. This was a great follow up to “Turning Japanese” and in my opinion a better song. With the added bonus of there being two songs on the ‘B’ side, “Talk Talk & Wasted, which were both non-album tracks so a Vapors fans dream of a single. The lyrics are interesting in “News At Ten” and still relevant today. Our children are now grown up so we can see the lyrics from a parents perspective.Try as you might to get your children to do what you consider is right they will nearly always do their own thing.I suppose isn’t that part of growing up being able to learn from your mistakes? I sometimes think they can’t hear us!!
